The Rolex Datejust hardly needs an introduction. Introduced in 1945, it became one of the cornerstones of the Rolex collection, combining the Oyster case, self-winding Perpetual movement and practical date display into a design that has remained remarkably timeless. Over the years, the Datejust has evolved through countless references, dials and bracelet combinations, but the basic recipe has stayed remarkably consistent.

Here we have a classic ref. 1601, with the familiar 36 mm Oyster case and a lovely, substantial profile. The watch is fitted with a crisp fluted bezel in 18k white gold, giving it that unmistakable Datejust look while keeping the overall appearance wonderfully understated.

The real talking point is the dial. Rather than the more commonly seen silver sunburst finishes, this one features an unusual vertically brushed surface combined with the classic pie-pan construction. The brushing creates a subtle texture that catches the light beautifully and gives the dial a surprisingly contemporary feel.

The black printed text provides a lovely contrast against the silver-toned dial, while the clean hour markers and traditional Datejust layout keep everything beautifully balanced.

The watch is fitted with a period Rolex folded-link Jubilee bracelet, ref. 6215H, with 55 end links and a clasp stamped 4/71 — a lovely little detail that helps date the bracelet and completes the vintage character of the watch.

A wonderfully honest ref. 1601 with all the classic ingredients, but with that unusual vertically brushed pie-pan dial giving it something extra. A Datejust that looks familiar at first glance but rewards a closer look.
