The Rolex Air-King reference 5500 is one of those watches that perfectly captures the beauty of simplicity. Produced from 1957 until 1989, it remained largely unchanged throughout its long production run — a testament to just how right Rolex got the formula from the very beginning.

No rotating bezel, no complications, no unnecessary details. Just a clean, honest Oyster case paired with timeless proportions and effortless wearability. In many ways, the 5500 represents Rolex at its most restrained.

One of our favourite details on these references is the typography used on the dial. It feels slightly more playful and expressive than what we typically associate with Rolex from the period, giving the watch a subtle character all of its own.

This particular example remains in really beautiful condition, retaining a strong 34mm Oyster case with an equally crisp smooth bezel and an honest overall appearance that collectors love to see. The matte silver dial is especially attractive, featuring applied Rolex signature text alongside unusual applied Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9 — giving the watch a subtle Explorer-like character. Elegant dauphine hands complete the look beautifully and add to the watch’s understated charm.

Fully serviced by our watchmaker, this fine Air-King is fitted with a lovely Bulang & Sons leather strap and is ready to be worn and enjoyed.
